The other day I mentioned that my husband and I are going to be traveling to London and Paris with our family for Christmas (Lord willing) in less than two weeks... it is a dream come true! I thought I'd tell the whole story of how it came about - my online December journal wouldn't be complete without it!
The last time we were all together for Christmas was in 2014. You can see that blog post HERE for a trip back in time.
One of my dreams is to be together for Christmas again. Another is to vacation together somewhere, someday. Here's the story of how these two things came together for this Christmas!
Back in August I was looking ahead at my flights for the rest of the year and saw that if I wanted to keep my "status" with American Airlines, I was going to need to take just one more long flight before the end of the year. I tentatively planned to take a quick trip to Paris in early December, just there and back to get the miles, but that seemed silly since I wouldn't really be able to enjoy it.
The idea popped in my head one morning as I woke up that I could use the miles that I've accumulated on American to get tickets for our kids to fly overseas with us, and I could accomplish three things - Christmas together, vacation together, and a long trip to get my miles in! The biggest obstacle to making that a reality is that my daughter-in-law, Becca, works in the health insurance industry and they aren't allowed to take days off in the month of December since it is their peak work time. They really can't go anywhere for Christmas since she only gets that day off work.
I decided to just take a chance and text each of the kids proposing the trip and see if there was any way that it could possibly happen. Jeremy could take time off work without a problem, and Brandon has leave due him from the Army, but Becca's situation would be nearly impossible. She went into her boss's office to ask if she could take off and was told that she knows that no one can take off in December. A while later Becca came back to the boss's office for something and was told that her request was approved! What??? It was a Christmas miracle!! (I think they really, really like her and didn't want to take a chance that she would leave!)
Thinking everyone was good to go, I got the plane tickets and prepaid for hotel rooms and got our train tickets to go from London to Paris, but in September, Brandon had a little accident and broke his foot. We don't know if that had anything to do with it, but the leave that should have been automatic was held up, actually until this week when he FINALLY got approval. Yikes and thank God! He'll be hobbling around a little since he's not 100% healed yet, but at least we'll be together.
Jeremy and Brandon have never been to London and Becca was there pushing me in a wheelchair, so we're beyond excited to experience it together. There will be lots of photos for sure! We all meet up in London on December 20. Can't wait!! I am so thankful.
Never give up on your dreams! xoxo
