After Jeremy and Becca left for a little vacation in NYC last Monday, my husband and I drove to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for three days with Brandon to see where he lives and works. It was long overdue!
He lives in a great house in Greensburg, about an hour outside Pittsburgh, just a few minutes commute from his work. I love his front porch swing!
We visited his favorite cafe where he gets his coffee most everyday. It looked just like a cafe I've been to in London - very charming! I love that they know him there.
Greensburg is much larger than I expected it to be! I love the courthouse building in the downtown area near his house.
One day we drove about an hour to Ohioplye State Park for a visit to Cucumber Falls.
We climbed the rocks and the logs and stones along the falls and the river. It's one of my favorite things to do!
Next time I want to do the white water rafting on the river - it looks like it's just about my speed.
We toured the nearby Frank Lloyd Wright house, Fallingwater. Believe it or not, it's the first time I've toured one of his houses. It was so interesting to learn more about his architectural philosophy and observe how he blended the house into the surroundings.
One of the features that makes Fallingwater so unique are the cantilevered balconies that extend out the sides. With no support under them - they are only attached to the main column of the building, kind of like a drawer stays in a dresser when it is fully open - there is no interruption to the flow of the building with the beautiful surroundings.
A couple weeks ago they had a huge rainstorm here and the water in the creek below was up to the 7th step of the stairway you can see here. Yikes!
As we were touring, I did what my mom and I always do and imagine where I'd have my morning cup of coffee. There were more places here to do that than I could count!
We really enjoyed seeing this place!
We got to stop by the recruiting center where Brandon is assigned and see where he goes to work every day. I'm so proud of him and his service to our country.
Our last day, after a delicious breakfast in Pittsburgh, we headed out for some shopping - my speed - and some target shooting for the guys - not my speed!
I loved having this time together and seeing where Brandon lives. We got to meet a group of his friends, too, which was awesome. It's hard to have our kids live far away, as I'm sure you can imagine! This mom's heart cherishes every minute we get with them - I'm so thankful for the men they are. It does my heart good!
(I had a great weekend of classes in California - I'll have photos of that next! I'm flying home today.)
