I'm on my way to Italy - to teach in Rome this Sunday, to spend some time exploring in Rome, and then to retreat to the countryside in Tuscany for a retreat with a special group of girls. I've been to Italy three times before, but it's been six years and I'm really excited to go back! I took some photos really quickly this morning of the books I've made after each of those trips and thought I'd share them again - many of you have seen them before, but for those who are newer readers, I thought you might enjoy seeing them!
My first trip to Italy was with my son Brandon in 2005. I used a book that I got on Amazon as the base for my pictures and memorabilia. It's only about 1/2" high but with all my stuff in there, the binding broke and it expanded to about 2 inches or so!
I used the illustrations in the book as part of the background for the pages, adding my photos and embellishments. I have to kind of laugh about all the ribbons that I used - it was definitely the in thing then.
Sometimes I left the pages whole, sometimes I cut them off shorter, and sometimes I folded them.
We went back the next year and this time I took a Moleskine sketchbook with me and journaled each day and glued in the things I wanted to save - and left spots for the photos I would print 1/2 size when I got home.
The next year I went to Germany with Jeremy and then in 2008 my husband and I went to Italy again. When I returned I made a book on Shutterfly with my pictures and journaling. I like it because it really highlights the photos!
I hope this inspires you to do something different with your travel photos! This time I tore a book about Italy apart and brought it with me - we'll see how it works out.
Time to board my overnight flight to Rome. I'll be back with updates as much as I can...
